Who is Welcome?

Jon at ASBO Jesus has a wonderful cartoon inviting us to examine how we as a church engage with the communities around us.  Some of us don’t like it when people come with questions.  Or people who don’t conform to ‘our standards’ without considering that ‘our’ standards aren’t the important standards to keep.

I was not really into Nirvana but in my head, all I can think is the lyrics to Come as You Are.

  1. I read that ‘attack, preferably kill the man, and not the ball’ comment that you got in reponse to your post and I find myself in a similar situation: within the evangelical camp (but often pulling out tentpegs!) but ashamed of evangelicals who wade in with their boots to defend ‘truth’.

I would have responded more but a close personal, distressing situation intervened.

I have many friends/people I network with who have suffered at the hands of those who cannot cope with questions so I want to say ‘thanks’ for sticking your head above the parapet- there are a lot of us out there who struggle with similar things.

The Psalms and U2 ‘saved’ me with their questions, but that is another story…

    Thanks!

…another ordained person, also in the north of england!

  2. Graham,

Thanks for your comment and encouragement. The older I get the more I realise that the labels we use are largely irrelevant. And the longer I spend as an ordained person, the more I realise that boxes are where we keep the dead people. I’m not particularly interested in putting God under the microscope and examining him like a ‘thing’. It is much more interesting to take up my cross and follow him.

Just visited your blog. I grew up not a million miles from you next to the North Yorkshire Moors.
